Help and answers

Common questions, every keyboard shortcut, and what to try when something is not behaving.

Frequently asked

Is Claude Toolbox really free?

Yes. Free to install, free to use, no paid tier, no trial period and no feature held back. There is no payment system in the extension at all.

Where is my data stored?

In your own browser, in the extension’s private database. Nothing is uploaded. See the privacy policy for the detail.

Why does search find nothing at first?

Search needs an index. Open the panel and click Index my conversations. The first run reads your history; after that the extension keeps itself up to date in the background.

Search finds old conversations but not new ones.

The background refresh runs every 30 minutes by default and needs a claude.ai tab open. Run Re-index from the panel header to catch up immediately, or shorten the interval in Settings.

Some conversations are searchable by title but not by message text.

Full-text indexing covers your most recent conversations up to the Message depth setting — 400 by default. Raise it in Settings and re-index to cover more.

Does it change or delete my conversations?

Only when you explicitly ask. Renaming, starring, archiving and deleting are actions you trigger. Deleting asks for confirmation because it removes the conversation from your Claude account permanently. Folders, tags and bookmarks live only in the extension and never touch your Claude data.

Why is the archive sometimes “in Toolbox only”?

Claude does not expose an archive action for every account. The extension tries the real one first, and falls back to hiding the conversation inside Toolbox — telling you which happened rather than pretending.

How accurate is the context meter?

It is an estimate. Claude does not publish its tokenizer, so the meter uses a character and word heuristic. It is reliable as a gauge of “this chat is getting long”, not as an exact token count.

Why does PDF export open a print dialog?

Because bundling a PDF library would add a large amount of third-party code to an extension that deliberately ships none. The extension builds a print-ready page and hands off to your browser; choose Save as PDF as the destination.

Nothing happens when I click Export.

The PDF and preview windows open in a new tab, so a pop-up blocker can stop them. Allow pop-ups for claude.ai and try again. Other formats download directly and are not affected.

Will my folders follow me to another computer?

Yes, if you are signed in to the same Chrome profile and sync is on. Folders, tags, bookmarks, conversation assignments and settings sync. Message text and artifact contents do not — Chrome only allows extensions about 100 KB of sync storage. Use Backup to move everything.

Does it work in Firefox or Safari?

Not today. They use different extension platforms. It works in Chrome 116+, Edge, Brave, Arc, Opera and Vivaldi.

Is this made by Anthropic?

No. It is an independent project, not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Anthropic.

Keyboard shortcuts

The first four are registered with Chrome, so they work even while you are typing in Claude. Change those at chrome://extensions/shortcuts; the rest are rebindable in the extension’s Settings.

Troubleshooting

The panel does not open

Reload the claude.ai tab — a content script cannot attach to a page that was already open when the extension was installed or updated. If Alt + C does nothing, check that another extension has not claimed the same shortcut at chrome://extensions/shortcuts.

“Not signed in to Claude”

The extension uses your existing claude.ai session. If you are signed out, or your session expired, sign in again in the same tab and retry. It never asks for and never stores your credentials.

Indexing stops partway

Claude rate-limits heavy request bursts. Indexing paces itself, but on a very large history it can still be asked to slow down. Wait a minute and run it again — it picks up where it left off rather than starting over.

Something looks broken after a Claude update

claude.ai is a third-party site that changes without notice. If indexing or the in-page controls stop behaving, please report it — include what you were doing and any errors from the browser console.

Still stuck?

Send the details and it will be looked at. Bug reports are more useful with your browser version and what you were doing when it happened.
